Twenty nine pilots signed up in
competition for the Pilot's Choice award. This year Jim
Lawrence won the top prize with his B-25. Second place was
awarded to Bob Hoover with a new, very large Tiger Moth. Third
place went to Mike McGuyer and his nicely detailed 540 Edge.
The voting was spread well across
sporting types, from museum quality models to rockets. It
definitely showed the wide diversity of use and enjoyment of our
members. This is the time of year that many of our competitive
pilots travel to events and contests through out the region.
Everyone enjoyed the sharing of time and food with friends.
Quite a few spectators dropped by
to review the day's activities. One of the highlights for the
children came when Rod Turner flew his Telemaster on a candy bombing
run. Another fun exhibition came when Jerry Tofte launched his
flexible rocket. The rocket pops apart at its apex of flight
and floats back to the ground in many pieces, tethered together on a
string, but without a parachute.
Hot dogs, donuts, maple bars, coffee,
apples, bananas, and grapes were available through out the day for
snacks. The lunch menu was Treager smoked beef roast, slices
thick and served on a hoagie roll. Potato salad and a garden
salad completed the meal. Approximately 40 pounds of
sliced beef was provided for the pilots and their families.
Bob Carey's wife brought two strawberry pies that put the final
touch on the day's meals.
Ron Cambell brought out the 14'
wingspan twin Moki-powered Gulf Stream IV, but arrived to late
for the contest. He did get a few votes, though, even without
a number. This giant beauty will grace the skies and deceive
the eye into believing that the full scale Gulfstream is overhead.
Great job, Ron. Sorry you missed the contest.
The awards were 8x10 photos of
the pilots at the field for the day's competition, encased in a poly
carbonate frame. Each of the top three pilots also received a
one ounce silver round as a remembrance of their effort in their
plane's construction and selection for award by fellow modelers.
It was a great sunny day.
Glad to have seen you if you were there, and sorry I missed you if
you weren't.
